Leaving Trento along the Valsugana Highway 47, the road skirts by the beautiful lakes of Levico and Caldonazzo towards the Brenta Valley. Ever since prehistoric times, this route has always been a web of cultural-trade relations between the central Venice region, upper Adriatic, and central Europe. The Vicenza area starts at Primolano and Cismon del Grappa, an old border protected by imposing seventeenth-century ramparts culminating in the Covolo del Bustione, the only fortress cut into a rock face in the whole Europe.
